I've always had great skin as a kid, but when I got to my early 20's I had full blown adult acne, I used everything from nutrogena, clinique, proactive and they all seemed to just sort of slow the process down but I was still breaking out. Eventually my skin gave in and it felt like the products stopped working.

Now I use Purifying cleanser and exfoliating cleanser from Bare escentuals, I also use their moisturizers and spot treatments as neccesary. My skin has never looked better, the exfoliating cleanser actually helped lighten up some scarring. A friend of mine used it for a while on her tummy after having a baby and it lightened up the stretch mark coloring too. I'd suggest looking into that.
References :
For one you may want to be easy on makeup around the zits, I have a feeling it will mess them up as easy as eyeshadow did my stye. Now I use clean and clear for my face sometimes, but as of for me a way to wash my face, smoothen it, and the zits start going away is using my body wash on my face. Try scrubbing hard, but not on the zits, you may hurt them worse!
References :
Apple cider vinegar, olive oil, honey and sugar or coffee grounds. About a teaspoon of each, but maybe a little more sugar/coffee grounds. Mix it all up and use it as a facial scrub. The apple cider vinegar helps to balance ph levels in your skin preventing break outs and evening out acne scars. The olive oil and honey helps to condition your skin, leaving it soft and smooth. The sugar/coffee grounds exfoliate your skin, also evening out acne scars gradually and aiding your skin in general. Try this every few days and you should see some improvement.
References :
experience

Try some natural remedies. Here's one. Drink water all fo the time. that's what i do. my face is so smooooooth.
Oh, and scrub your face in sugar and water and then wash it off. Over time your face glows and the pimples start to fade
